Planet Poker suspends real-money play

Planetpoker.com, the Internet's first real-money card room, will suspend their cash game play beginning March 31.

The company said it was closing because of payment processing issues related to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, according to press release.

All players "can rest assured that their funds are safe and secure as they have been for the past 9 years," the statement said. Current customers will receive email notification about how to withdraw their money.

Players wishing to continue to play online poker will have the option of transferring their balances to another online card room that has an agreement with Planet Poker or withdraw their money. However, the release does not state the other site involved. The Web site is recommending that new players join Bodog Poker.

"Given the difficulties getting funds into an online card room, we strongly advise players to transfer funds in order to avoid cash-out delays and the inevitable hurdles of re-depositing at a new online site," the release said.

Planet poker may re-enter the market if the U.S. passes legislation legalizing online gambling in the United States, the release said. But for now, the Web site will only allow play-money action.

Planet Poker is part of the United Poker Network, which also includes the sports-gambling.com and pokerblue.com brands.

Governor Schwarzenegger Signs Casino Deals with Tribes

California's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has signed a pro-gambling law Tuesday which will allow four of the richest casino-operating tribes in the state to add up to 17,000 new slot machines.
The new bill also allows one of the poorest tribes in California, the Yuroks, to open a new casino with 999 slot machines near U.S. Highway 101.
The new additions to the casinos in Southern California could generate between $13.4 billion to $22.4 billion in tribal revenue-sharing payments to California in the next 25 years.
Meanwhile, UNITE HERE, a casino, hotel and hospitality workers union, are protesting the bill due to a lack of workers protections in the agreements. They are collecting signatures in order to prevent the expansions of the tribes' casinos.

2007 WSOP Prize Set at $8.25 Million; Phil Hellmuth Busts Out

The top prize at the $10,000 buy-in no-limit Texas Hold‘em main event of the 2007 World Series of Poker will be $8.25, based on the 6,358 players who have entered the event over the tournament’s four starting days.
According the tournament's organizers, the payoff was revised up from the previously announced $8.23 million. Approximately $59.8 million will be paid out of the tournament’s pot to players who finish in the money.Last year's WSOP had a record 8,773 participants and was the biggest WSOP tournament ever, with a huge $12 million 1st prize. Due to the new online gambling law in the U.S., many potential players, who could once qualify via online poker sites, have been lost to the organizers.
In other WSOP news, poker legend Phil Hellmuth Jr. busted out of the tournament with a Ad/Qs hand against Isura Edirisinghe of Waterloo, Canada who had 10d/10c. The board came 9c/Jc/Js/Qc/6c giving Edirisinghe a flush.
Hellmuth did manage to make history in this year's WSOP by winning his 11th gold WSOP bracelet. He is the first to do so - both Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson were tied with Hellmuth with 10 bracelets.

2007 World Series of Poker Draws More Than 54,000 Entrants

Las Vegas - The 2007 World Series of Poker presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light attracted 54,288 total registrants, the most in World Series of Poker history.
The 55-event series, played at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, is now culminating with the $10,000 No-Limit Texas Hold’em World Championship, commonly referred to as the Main Event. With 6,358 entries, this year’s Main Event is the second-largest live poker tournament ever played.
“Poker is alive and well, and the 2007 World Series of Poker has been a tremendous success,” said World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack.
In all, the 2007 WSOP generated a total prize pool of $159,796,918. The Main Event prize pool is $59,784,954, with the winner receiving $8.25 million. A total of 621 Main Event players will finish in the money and will receive at least $20,320, more than double their original buy-in.
Among the highlights of this year’s World Series of Poker were record turnouts for the Ladies Championship, the Seniors Championship and the $50,000 HORSE Championship. This year also saw the single busiest day in World Series of Poker history, when 3,151 players participated in a $1,500 No-Limit Texas Hold’em Championship on June 30.
Due to the size of the Main Event playing field, the tournament’s start was spread over four days. Beginning tomorrow, the next stage of the tournament will be split over two days, after which the fields will merge for a single Day 3 on July 11. The Main Event final table will begin at noon on July 17.
The WSOP is operated by an affiliate of Harrah's Entertainment, Inc., the world's largest operator of casino-entertainment resorts.

Judge Allows Pennsylvania Casinos to Remain Open Despite State Shutdown

A Pennsylvania judge granted an injunction yesterday allowing Pennsylvania's casinos to remain open despite a furlough of state employees.
Senior Judge Keith B. Quigley allowed casinos to remain open despite Gov. Ed Rendell announcement of at least a one-day furlough starting today.
In a special meeting on Sunday night, Pennsylvania's Gaming Control Board voted to issue an order shutting down the casinos in the event of Revenue Department furloughs that disable the department's central computer system. The vote's results were 7-0.
The board held the vote due to the fact that Pennsylvania's 9,907 slot machines are hooked into that same computer system. Employees who oversee the system are among the almost 1,700 Revenue workers facing furloughs.
